The Politics of Distress

I recently had the good fortune to be able to attend a CPD event hosted by James Davies - author of Sedated and Cracked. This was hosted by the Therapists and Social Change Network (which I subscribe to, as a Counsellor & Psychotherapist).

I can highly recommend both of James Davies books (links above) and this was a highly intriguing and animated discussion about social factors which show that mental health outcomes have been falling since the 1980s, regardless of huge amounts of money being ploughed into 'mental health' and IAPT programmes. Did you know that 20% of the UK's population take psychiatric medication each year? (And this is a number which continues to increase).

If you've ever been curious about the links between the medical model, individual emotional distress, mental health diagnoses and capitalism  - you'll be fascinated by his work.
